Garages & Warehouses
Perhaps the most prosaic group of single-story buildings are garages, warehouses, and workshops. These buildings house blue-collar jobs, and, as they disappear, the economic diversity and diversity of uses in these neighborhoods diminishes. Friedberg often encounters a stark contrast between the owners and the workers in these buildings. Owners often welcome real estate speculators as a way to cash out, while workers see their jobs and ways of life hanging in the balance.
